Another of our employees - Karlie Sweetman - recently raced in the Arley Hall Race for Life. We caught up with her and asked her about the whole experience and her thoughts on charity work...
I have family affected by this and so does my partner. To be honest, my motivation was my mother in law, we do the race for life together every year. She is a survivor of breast cancer and her husband it a survivor of bowel cancer.
Well, thanks to my new doggy I have been going on 3 walks a day for around an hour at a time around Victoria Park.
Well as I do it with my mother in law whom is 64 years old, we don’t usually run the race for life. It’s a race that you can walk, run or jog….or in previous years crawl in my case. We usually walk the race at a fast pace and think of those that have lost the battle, we will chat about memories of those loved ones that we miss. It’s a very emotional experience for me but so rewarding at the end when you think of the money raised to help beat cancer.
A little bit of “thank god its over, somebody get me a pint” and a lot of “ wow, I’ve finished and all that money is officially going to cancer research….I usually have a peek at the time too so I have something to beat next year.
Basically that if we all do our bit, we can make the world a little brighter. There are a lot of people that haven’t been affected by cancer and I like to think that by me doing the race for life every year, I am in someway preventing those people having to lose a loved one.
