We managed to get a few minutes to talk with employee Heather Tait, who ran the Race For Life at Tatton Park, Cheshire, on Sunday 19th June 2011. She managed to complete the challenging 10k run in just 1 hour and 9 minutes, raising - from just Gladstone Brookes donations alone - a staggering £676.00 for Cancer Research UK. Here's what Heather had to say about her performance, her reasons for raising money and what she has taken from the experience.
What was your motivation for raising funds for Cancer Research UK in particular?
My friend was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2008 which is a rare form of blood cancer. After several rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, her cancer is now a small speck being held back from developing again. I wanted to run Race for Life this year to raise awareness and vital funds to help more people beat cancer.
What kind of preparation did you have in the weeks leading up to the race?
I started preparing for the run six weeks before, running 3km twice a week. I have never done a run of this length before so I was unsure of what to expect.
What sort of problems or issues did you endure on the run, if any?
The most gruelling part of the run was between the 4-7km marks, but there were volunteers and spectators around the course cheering everyone on, helping keep people going.
What did it feel like to cross the finish line?
There was a huge crowd towards the end of the course, encouraging everyone to make that final push across the finish line. I finished on 1hr, 9mins and was relieved for it to be over! I am proud that I got through it as there were parts where I doubted my ability, but I am glad I pushed through it to the end.
What have you taken from the whole experience?
I managed to raise over £750.00 for CRUK, for only a couple of hours of my time on a Sunday morning.
